25 individuals who came to Canada as refugees fleeing the Kosovo war honoured in Ottawa
In an evening filled with emotion, dignity, and national pride, Parliament of Canada became the stage where 25 extraordinary stories from the Albanian diaspora were honoured.
The event, “25@25: Honouring Refugees, Resilience and Stories of Survival,” was presented at the Parliament of Canada as part of “25@25: Refugees Making a Difference,” a storytelling initiative created, written, and produced by Albanian-Canadian journalist Arta Rexhepi. The initiative seeks to challenge the narratives surrounding refugees by shining a light on the remarkable lives they built after arriving in Canada and being considered "refugee success stories". The initiative is a first of its kind, exploring the lives of Kosovo refugees 25 years later, the impact of war, the challenges of starting over with trauma and overcoming a difficult new beginning.
Presented by The Artistè Foundation in partnership with Member of Parliament, Kyle Seeback, the evening highlighted the journeys of individuals who arrived in Canada as refugees and went on to become accomplished professionals, leaders, entrepreneurs, community builders, and contributors to Canadian society.
Their stories also served as a powerful reminder of Canada’s humanitarian response during the Kosovo crisis and Operation Parasol, and of the profound impact that offering refugees aid can have not only on those seeking safety, but on the country that welcomes them.
At the heart of the evening was the recognition of 25 individuals whose stories embody strength, sacrifice, professionalism, and leadership.
The evening featured performances, attendance by Albanian and Canadian officials, members of the Albanian and general Canadian public gathering in Ottawa from across Canada. The program lineup also included an address by Tanya Domi, Professor of Columbia University, whose academic and human rights work has focused extensively on Bosnia and Kosovo, adding important historical and regional context on refugee experiences, trauma, the resilience of survivors and the impact of Canada's humanitarian response.
Arnisa Morina arrived in Canada as a three-year-old child, carrying the pain of losing her father during the war. Today, she is an accomplished lawyer in Toronto, using the law as a tool to protect and empower others, particularly refugees.
Arta Shala has dedicated her work to one of society’s most compassionate sectors, elder care. As Vice President of a residence serving over 1,500 residents in Ottawa, she represents commitment to dignity and human well-being.
Arbnor Krasniqi, a long-standing community leader, has built bridges of cooperation and understanding as former President of the Albanian Association in Ottawa, strengthening community ties and cultural identity.
Belinda Lahu, through the power of storytelling and communication, has built a strong profile in public relations and creative fields, contributing both in Kosovo’s institutions and diaspora-focused initiatives.
Remzi Cej, who arrived in Canada as a teenager after experiencing the trauma of war, is now a leading voice in human rights. A Rhodes Scholar and recipient of multiple prestigious awards, he has played a key role in advancing inclusion and social justice across Canada and beyond. Cej was not in attendance.
Elbonita McNally, who came as a child refugee, has built a unique path blending healthcare and art. As a nurse and internationally recognized photographer, she captures human stories worldwide while continuing to support refugee integration in Canada. McNally was not in attendance.
Shani Pnishi’s story reflects transformation through storytelling and community engagement. From a young war witness to a community leader, he co-founded the Albanian Association in Hamilton and helped establish the city’s first Albanian Community Centre. Pnishi was not in attendance.
Xhemajl Rexha, a distinguished journalist, represents another dimension of impact. From covering major historical events to reporting from global conflict zones, he remains a strong advocate for press freedom and professional journalism. Rexha was not in attendance.
Shkumbin Pllana represents a generation that not only integrated but became active contributors to society. From a child refugee to a leader and mentor, his journey reflects resilience and bridge-building between cultures. Pllana was not in attendance.
Dani Brajshori embodies public service in Canada. His work within the Department of National Defence and participation in national ceremonies position him as a key institutional contributor.
Dardan Kelmeni is a success story of the new generation, an entrepreneur, TED Talks speaker, and co-founder of a multi-million-dollar company, representing innovation and economic impact.
Dr. Hylkije Ymeri, who served on the front lines during the Kosovo War, continues her mission in Canada as a physician, bringing compassion and dedication to healthcare.
Dr. Ryve Loshaj, from practicing medicine in wartime conditions with the Kosovo Liberation Army, is now a respected physician and academic in Canada, mentoring future generations of doctors.
Enisa Hyseni works on the frontlines of social support, assisting vulnerable individuals, including victims of violence, while also leading initiatives that support children in need.
Leonora Abdullahu, a name in science and innovation, has built a career in pharmaceutical research, contributing to life-changing therapies and inspiring young Albanians in STEM.
The Xhekaj Family represents excellence in sports and resilience. Their achievements highlight the opportunities Canada provides, while their family story is deeply rooted in the refugee experience. The Xhekaj were not in attendance.
Lirim Hajrullahu transformed his journey into success through sport, becoming a two-time Grey Cup champion and proudly representing the Albanian community on a national stage.
Qendresa Sahiti transitioned from the hardships of war to recognition in medicine, contributing to mental health and being honoured by the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.
Shpresa Loshaj, an internationally recognized activist, has raised her voice for environmental protection and human rights, earning global recognition and awards.
Equally inspiring is the story of Xheneta Mehmeti, born in a refugee camp while her family fled Kosovo. Raised in Halifax, she built a strong identity between her Albanian heritage and Canadian life. With a Bachelor of Commerce and a career in human resources, she has also contributed significantly to community life through volunteer leadership. Mehmeti wasn't in attendance.
Mergim and Leutrim Veliu represent two successful paths, one in aviation as a commercial pilot, and the other in public safety, both contributing meaningfully to Canadian society.
Venera Loshaj, through writing, has transformed the refugee experience into art, leaving a mark in contemporary literature.
Venesa Sulimani is one of the strongest global voices advocating for human rights and intergenerational trauma awareness, turning her personal story into a mission for change.
Kadrushe Kolshi represents the silent sacrifice of thousands of mothers during the war, helping others while searching for her own children, a story of strength and pain.
Meanwhile, Dr. Agron Alija, honoured posthumously, remains a powerful symbol connecting war-time experience with service in Canada. His contribution as a physician and witness to history secures his place in collective memory.

A Community That Builds the Future: These individuals represent far more than personal success stories. They are the embodiment of a community that, despite past trauma, has risen to make extraordinary contributions to Canadian society. From medicine and law to art, activism, and entrepreneurship, each story is a vital chapter in the Albanian diaspora’s journey in Canada.
A Message That Endures“25@25” was more than an event, it was a powerful statement of identity, memory, and pride. A reminder that refugees are not only stories of survival, but stories of success, impact, and transformation.
